Women, Violence and Jirga

The review examines literature on the ‘Jirga’, the informal judicial system focusing on the
structural and direct forms of violence against women embedded in the practice. It reflects on the
evolution and contemporary role of jirgas and its antiwomen practices, its prevalence and interface
with the formal legal system. Reflecting the arguments and collaborations that enable the longevity
of the jirga system, it summarily presents the options for redressing the issue.
