Standardized Indicators Violence Against Women in Pakistan

Violence against women (VAW) in its many pervasive forms is a global phenomenon that has been well
documented. In Pakistan too there has been an increasing spotlight on incidents of violence against
women. Qualitative studies on VAW reveal a significant pattern of violence within families and
communities by a range of perpetrators. These studies have resulted in the development of support
mechanisms for women in crisis in Pakistan, such as shelters, helplines, counselling facilities and
a demand for exemplary punishment for perpetrators. Recent small scale studies have also highlighted
the social and economic costs of VAW, not just to the family but also to the national economy.
